The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were setup in early fifties to facilitate engineering and technical higher education in India after independence and are twenty three in number today. They have been declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India.
Each IIT is an autonomous university, governed by a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. There is a common Admission process for IIT for undergraduate admissions through and Entranc Exam named JEE Advaced which caters to approx. 12000 seats an year.
